The world is full of opposites.

On the one hand, in my private life, I try to reduce the amount of time I spend on social media. It simply eats up too much time and distracts me from real life (but that’s just my personal take).

On the other hand: „You need to be on social media!” Especially as an indie developer who wants to share the development journey of a game, that’s a fact you hear constantly and which is pretty hard to ignore.

So here I am: Deciding to open a social media channel for Pinecone Grove, while not being particularly good at social media. 😀

The next big question is: Where do you go?

X (formerly known as Twitter), Facebook (old people might remember this one), Bluesky…? Well, as I already spoiled in the headline, I decided to go with Bluesky.

And here’s why:

Even though X is still much more prominent than Bluesky (so purely from an outreach perspective it might be “smarter” to be on X) I simply like the concept behind Bluesky more.

X is heavily driven by algorithms designed to maximize attention and engagement. In my personal view, that can contribute to an environment where outrage, panic, political polarization and sensational content get amplified.

Bluesky takes a different approach.

The format is quite similar to X: Short posts, pictures, videos and so on. But the experience feels different. Instead of an algorithmically curated feed being pushed into your timeline, Bluesky offers a chronological feed of posts from the accounts you follow. That is a big difference as you see the content you want to see (and not the content the algorithm wants you to see).

And then there’s the technology behind it. Bluesky uses the AT Protocol (Authenticated Transfer Protocol), an open protocol designed to give users and developers more control and flexibility over how social media works and how data can move between services.

Also, at least from my perspective, Bluesky’s approach to advertising and AI is much more appealing. There’s currently no traditional advertising model filling your feed with ads, and Bluesky has stated that it does not use user content to train generative AI models.

All of this makes Bluesky a package that resonates much more strongly with me. So even if I might reach fewer people there than I would on X, the choice was actually pretty easy.

Long story short: If you’re interested in regular, small social media updates from Pinecone Grove, you can now find us on Bluesky! 🙂

All the bigger development updates, articles and blog posts will, of course, continue to appear right here. It would be great to see many of you over there!

Until then, I wish you all the best and happy growing! 🌱
